Banzai Sushi & Teriyaki House (Elbow Drive)

Let’s establish the baseline first: this was an Uber Eats dispatch, not an in-house seating. A definitive, final verdict on Banzai Sushi & Teriyaki House requires a chair, a table, and interaction with staff. But as anyone who reads my reviews knows, I don’t pull my punches. Every ticket that prints in a kitchen has value, and a delivery order should still command respect. I write about my personal experience with each place. A bad day still exists for the customer even if it’s uncommon.

THE APPETIZER: TAKOYAKI

I started simple with a favorite ofi mine;the takoyaki. To Banzai’s credit, they serve a generous six-pack rather than the stingy four-ball portion common at some shops. Delivery transit inevitably turns any takeout container into a mini-sauna, meaning the golden, crispy outer shell surrendered to the steam. I don’t expect miracles.

Despite the loss of crunch, the flavor profile survived. The batter texture was damn near perfect, even if the taste was merely serviceable. The real disappointment lay buried inside: the octopus. The pieces were minuscule and overcooked just past that beautiful, snappy sweet spot. Instead of a clean bite, it was rubber. A proper drizzling of sauce and a heavy dusting of dancing bonito flakes saved the dish, but only just.

THE MAIN EVENT: BUILD-YOUR-OWN POKE

Next came the customizable Poké bowl. The ingredient grid here is respectable, offering a broad spread of bases, proteins, sauces, and a solid selection of toppings to round things out. I would have preferred a pure mixed-greens option to bypass the heavy grains entirely, but I settled for a brown rice and lettuce split. Tamago was also missing from the toppings checklist—a shame, but a minor personal preference.

The real issues came down to lazy execution:

  • The Shrimp Tails: As my protein I paired shrimp with the spicy tuna, and they arrived with the tails fully intact. This is an irritating culinary phenomenon I encounter all over the globe, and it completely baffles me. Nobody wants to pause mid-meal to fish saucy shrimp out of a bowl with their fingers, pinch off the wet tails, and drop them back into the mix. It’s just wrong.
  • The Avocado: While the topping portion was generous, it arrived completely uncut. Serving a massive, intact quarter or thitd-flesh of avocado in a tossed dish is simply thoughtless.

On the plus side, the house poké sauce and sesame dressing I chose paired nicely and were perfectly portioned to coat the ingredients well, though the sesame leaned aggressively salty.

SIDE NOTE: THE GREAT POKE MISNOMER

Let’s step onto the soapbox for a brief moment of truth regarding what many have come to believe “poké” actually is. I’ll be completely honest: what most Western joints serve under this label is actually just a glorified sashimi salad. It bears absolutely zero resemblance to the seasoned, deeply rooted, real-deal raw fish traditions of Hawaii. A meal you need to have, trust me.

THE VERDICT FOR TODAY’S MEAL

At the end of the day, it was a perfectly fine dinner. I’m withholding any sweeping, definitive review and rating until I can physically park myself at their Elbow Drive counter. Until then, I will continue to report from the field and call the shots exactly as I taste them.

As a further aside I give props to my delivery driver for bringing my meal directly to me in my hospital room. That is beyond the call.
